STAR WARS HALLOWEEN

I love Halloween. Always have. Since having kids, my love for Halloween has risen to a whole new level. What's better than reliving one of your fondest childhood memories through the lens of your own kids?

For the creative wanderers of the world, Halloween is just one big empty canvas. We get to imagine, play and dream up ideas outside our comfort zone. And this year, was definitely out of my comfort zone.

I am (somewhat) embarrassed to admit that I've only seen 1 Star Wars movie. And if you asked me which one, I sadly wouldn't even be able to tell you. I know many of the iconic moments from pop culture references, (like yes, I know the most of the main characters by name and yes, I know Darth Vader is Luke's father) but that's about it.

Lego Star Wars made its debut in our house about 6 months ago and Joe was immediately hooked. I still don't understand the infatuation with kids and these Lego movies. Like why watch Lego Batman when you can just watch regular Batman? But he loves them, and Star Wars is by far his favorite.

I wasn't surprised when he asked to be Luke Skywalker for Halloween. He's a smart kid and knew exactly what he was doing. If he was Luke Skywalker, mom and dad would have to buy him a light saber, right? It's every kid's dream. And James of course jumped at the idea of renting a legit Darth Vader costume (and was equally as excited about his own light saber).  I, on the other hand, wasn't as jazzed. I'm still holding onto the magic of family costumes and knew that I either had to get on board, or lose the family-theme all together. So I got on board.

3 days before our neighborhood Halloween costume competition, James and I decided to kick our costumes up a notch and created a landspeeder for our little Luke Skywalker to fly in. I had no idea what a landspeeder was, but suddenly found myself sketching up blueprints with ideas on where to add spray paint and tin foil to make it appear more "authentic." (I have issues, I know...) I loved working on this project into the wee hours of the night with James, and I loved even more seeing the look on Joe's face when he saw it for the first time.

To make the weekend even more special, Joe & Faye's Aunt & Uncle visited and joined in on the costume theme. It turned out to be such a fun weekend, and the kids loved every minute of it.

For the landspeeder, we used an oversized cardboard box for the frame, poster shipping tubes for the jets, plexiglass & grippers for the windshield, and red duct tape, crackled & metallic spray paint and tin foil for the finishing touches.

I purchased the adorable Yoda ears on Etsy from BrielleShoppe.

May the force be with you.
